The trip begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, in Georgetown, DC. We pass through Georgetown, along the water-filled canal, through Great Falls National Park, and over the first aquaduct before lunch at Whites Ferry. After lunch, we continue through a heavily wooded dry-bed section of the Canal to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where hotel showers and a buffet dinner at the Historic Hilltop House await.
The second day continues along the dry bed and into the Blue Ridge Mountains segment, where caves reach deep into the trailside bluff and scenic river views break up long land traverses. Areas of watered canal, scenic dams, “Big Slackwater” and “Four Locks” highlight the day. The day ends in Hancock, MD, a welcome oasis.
The final day could be crisp or foggy, but any way it begins, it’s a great day. Historic Round Top Cement Mill, the famous Paw Paw Tunnel, and “Old Town” are today’s highlights. At the end of the trail, we are picked up for charter bus return to Georgetown, returning by 8:30 p.m.
